In his State of the Union Address, President Bush made a call to the American people, encouraging them to serve their country through volunteerism in the USA Freedom Corps. As a part of the newly formed USA Freedom Corps, the Citizens Corps provides national support to two important active programs currently in place in the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office. In answering the President's call, we are immediately set to substantially expand both programs. The programs include:
The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office currently utilizes dedicated volunteers for a wide variety of services within the department. Volunteers with our department provide a tremendous public service which improves the efficiency and effectiveness of our overall responsibility to protect the public. In response to President Bush's call for additional volunteers under the USA Freedom Corps, our Sheriff's Office is looking for additional volunteers who have a commitment to providing support to our operations. We plan to expand not only the number of volunteers, but also the number of duties that volunteers will be able to help us with. This increased use of volunteers allows our Deputies or other Sheriff's Office Officers to concentrate their efforts on their primary public safety and security functions. Some examples of volunteer job assignments that may be available include:
Fleet maintenance volunteer for shuttling patrol cars for service, brake jobs, tire changes, etc.
Depending on the number of volunteers and their areas of interest, we may later provide additional volunteer opportunities. As you can see, having volunteers assist in these areas can provide a tremendous level of service to our Sheriff's Office and to the residents of this County. The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office is currently involved in Neighborhood Watch Programs in a number of our local communities. In support of President Bush's call for additional volunteers we are ready to expand our Neighborhood Watch program throughout the County. The Executive Director of the National Sheriff's Association updated us on the Neighborhood Watch - new counter-terrorism initiative. The release stated: "In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, our national focus has centered on the idea of homeland security. Although homeland security is a broad issue, it encompasses, at it's grassroots level, the idea of securing our own homes and neighborhoods. This has created a new role for NSA's National Neighborhood Watch Program.
Americans do not want to feel helpless. They want to know what role they can play in the fight against terrorism. The existing structure of Neighborhood Watch groups throughout the Nation is the network through which timely information and new training will be delivered to America."
In Minnehaha County, our limited staff has a jurisdiction that covers nearly 800 square miles. The eyes and ears of the public can be our most important asset on our fight against crime and potential acts of terrorism. If you have an interest in answering the President's call by becoming part of our expanding Neighborhood Watch Program, contact us at: 367-4300 or e-mail Mike Milstead.
