The former Minnehaha County Juvenile Court Center first opened in 1969 as a 20-bed facility. In February 2023, and after over a decade of study and evaluation, the Minnehaha County Commission authorized the replacement of the original Juvenile Court Center through the construction of a new, safe, and modern facility. Since May 2024, construction on what will be known as the Minnehaha County Juvenile Justice Center has been ongoing. Phase 1, the secure detention portion of the new facility, is operational as of October 2025 and will be referred to as the “Juvenile Detention Center” until full completion of the project. Phase 2 construction, which will include a courtroom and offices for legal and administrative services, is expected to be operational in early 2027. In addition to meeting the safe and secure detention for Minnehaha County, the facility also provides secure detention for the needs of 16 surrounding South Dakota Counties, to include: Bon Homme, Brookings, Charles Mix, Clay, Davison, Hanson, Hutchinson, Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Turner, Union and Yankton. The mission of the Minnehaha County Regional Juvenile Detention Center is to protect the public and to provide a safe, secure and humane environment for youth that are placed in our custody.
